About
The Padma Bridge joins Louhajang in Munshiganj to Jajira in Shariatpur, with a small part in Shibchar, Madaripur. It is a two-level steel truss bridge: a four-lane highway on top and a single railway track below, in 41 spans of about 150 m each, 6.15 km in all. It is the longest bridge in Bangladesh, and its piles go down 127 m, the deepest of any bridge in the world. Building it across a river this wide and deep is counted the hardest construction project in the country's history.
It opened on 25 June 2022 and tied the south-west to Dhaka by road; more than 15,000 vehicles cross it on an average day. For Shariatpur it means the district's front door: buses from Dhaka come over it to Jajira, and trains on the Dhaka–Jashore line stop at Padma station at its south end. The best way to see it is simply to cross it, by bus or by train, in daylight.
Getting there: Every bus between Dhaka and Shariatpur crosses it; Padma station is at the south end, in Shibchar.
Things to do
- Cross it in daylight by bus for the view of the river.
- Take the train over the lower deck to Padma station.
Good to know
- Cross in daylight: at night you see little of the river.
