About

For decades Mawa was where the southwest crossed the Padma by ferry and launch, and the eating houses that fed the waiting crowds became a destination of their own. You pick your fish, it is fried in front of you, and you eat it with rice, lentils and the fried roe, looking at the river.

Since the bridge opened in 2022 the ferries are fewer, but the restaurants remain and the bridge itself is now part of the view.

Getting there: Bus from Dhaka on the Mawa expressway, about an hour.

Things to do

  • Eat fried hilsa with the roe, then watch the bridge at sunset.

Good to know

  • Ask whether the fish is fresh or frozen; off season it is often frozen.
