About

Shamsher Gazi (1712–1760), the "tiger of Bhati", rose from a peasant family to rule the whole of what is now Feni, Cumilla and Tripura for twelve years before the Nawab's forces caught him. His capital was here: a square earth fort with a moat, the great Kaiyara dighi he dug, a mosque, and the entrance to a tunnel that local stories say ran for miles. Mounds and the tank are what remain, in a quiet village; the district has put up signs and a memorial.

Getting there: CNG from Chhagalnaiya bazar north toward Champaknagar, about 20 minutes.

Things to do

  • Walk the fort mound and the dighi bank.

Good to know

  • Ask in the village for the tunnel mouth; it is easy to miss.
