About
The hills behind Mirsharai hold a dozen waterfalls, and Khoiyachora, in the union of the same name, is the largest and the best known: nine big steps and many smaller ones, the water dropping from pool to pool down a narrow gorge. Getting there is the point as much as arriving. From the highway at Khoiyachora a track leads a couple of kilometres to the last tea stalls, and then the trail follows the stream itself, wading, scrambling over boulders and clinging to roots on the steep bits, for about an hour to the first fall. The upper steps need a climb up the side that is worth it only for the sure-footed.
In full flow, from July to October, the falls are loud and the pools are deep enough to sit in; in winter they thin to a few streams but the gorge stays green. Nearby are Napittachora, Sahasradhara and other falls on the same range for people who want more.
Getting there: Any Dhaka-bound bus to the Khoiyachora stop on the highway (about 1½ hours), then a CNG or a walk along the track to the trailhead.
Things to do
- Trek up the stream to the first fall and sit in the pool.
Good to know
- Wear shoes with grip, keep phones in a dry bag, and do not climb the wet rock faces; people are hurt here every year.
- Start by mid-morning and be back on the track before dusk; a sudden downpour upstream raises the water fast.
