A flooded limestone quarry at Tekerghat, officially Shahid Siraj Lake, whose blue-green water lies right under the Meghalaya hills.
At a glance
- Official name
- Shahid Siraj Lake
- Origin
- A disused limestone quarry
About
Tekerghat was once a limestone mine; when quarrying stopped, the pit filled with water and turned a startling blue. Small grassy mounds surround it, the hills rise on the Indian side a stone's throw away, and the old quarry railway and machinery lie rusting near by.
Most visitors come from Tanguar Haor in the same trip: houseboats moor near Tekerghat for the night. Small boats take you across the lake.
Getting there: By boat via Tanguar Haor in the rains, or by road and motorbike from Tahirpur in winter.
Things to do
- Climb the mound beside the lake for the view over the water to the hills.
Good to know
- The lake is deep and steep-sided; swim only where locals do.
