About
Bhitargarh first appears in print in 1838, in Montgomery Martin's account of eastern India. Within its concentric walls archaeologists have marked some twenty sites, and recent digs have uncovered brick structures and stone carvings.
Much of it is now fields and villages, so what you see are ramparts, excavation trenches and the great Maharajar Dighi inside. It suits a slow walk or ride with a local who knows the tracks.
Getting there: Auto or CNG from Panchagarh town towards Amarkhana, about 16 km.
Things to do
- Trace the ramparts and see any open excavation.
Good to know
- It lies by the border; carry ID.
