About
After the Noakhali riots of October 1946, Gandhi came and walked from village to village for four months. The house at Jayag, given by the zamindar Barrister Hemanta Kumar Ghosh, was his base, and after Independence his follower Charu Chowdhury kept it going through prison and partition. The trust formed in 1975 runs it now: a museum of photographs and the few objects of his stay, his room, a library, and projects in weaving, farming and schooling for the villages around.
It is a quiet place in a Hindu-Muslim village that remembers why he came.
Getting there: CNG from Sonaimuri or Bajra bazar on the Cumilla road, about 15 minutes.
Things to do
- See his room and the photographs of the walk.
Good to know
- Pair it with the Bajra Shahi mosque, 15 minutes away.
