About

Dwarkanath Tagore bought the estate in 1830, and Rabindranath arrived to manage it sixty years later. He did more than collect rents: the family set up a school, a charitable dispensary and, in 1905, an agricultural bank for the tenants, and their traces are still in the village.

The two-storey kachari has been restored, with his belongings, photographs and letters in the rooms, a bust of the poet by the pond and a quiet garden. It fills with visitors on 25 Boishakh, his birth anniversary, when songs and a fair take over the grounds.

Getting there: From Naogaon town to Atrai by bus or train, then a CNG to Patisar, about 12 km.

Things to do

  • See the rooms upstairs, then sit at the pond ghat by the bust.

Good to know

  • Come on 25 Boishakh for the celebration, or on a quiet weekday for the house itself.
