- Shitalakshya, west bank
About
Its date is not certain, but it is thought to have been built soon after the Mughals made Dhaka their capital in the early 1600s, against Magh and Portuguese raids up the rivers. The walls have loopholes for guns, and a raised round platform inside once carried cannon.
It is one of three river forts that guarded the approaches to Dhaka, with Sonakanda across the river and Idrakpur in Munshiganj. Bibi Mariam's mosque is a few minutes away.
Getting there: Rickshaw or auto from Narayanganj town (Chashara), about 15 minutes.
Things to do
- Walk the wall walk and look through the gun loopholes to the river.
Good to know
- Pair it with Bibi Mariam mosque and a boat across to Sonakanda.
