About
Trishal remembers that as a schoolboy Nazrul would sit under a banyan at Namapara, by the Shukni beel, and play the flute. When the government founded a university for the national poet, it chose that spot: Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University was established in 2006 at Namapara-Bottola and opened to its first students in June 2007. It now has more than eight thousand.
The campus has a sculpture of Nazrul, a central memorial named Chiro Unnoto Momo Shir after a line of his poem "Bidrohi", and a Shaheed Minar beside the old arts building. Every winter since 2019 its students have run the Kuasha Utsab, a crowd-funded fog festival of folk and Nazrul songs, crafts, films and more than fifty kinds of pitha.
Getting there: At Namapara-Bottola in Trishal, about 22 km south of Mymensingh on the Dhaka highway.
