About

Founded in 1961, BAU is the country's third-oldest university, and its campus fills 1,200 acres on the west bank of the Old Brahmaputra, 5 km south-east of the town centre. In 1965 the American modernist Paul Rudolph was asked to plan it; his master plan and key buildings took a decade to build. A palm-lined avenue runs east to west through the middle, with the academic buildings to the north and the halls and playing fields to the south.

At the east end of the avenue stand the Shaheed Minar and the Bijoy '71 sculpture. The Botanical Garden covers 25 acres on the riverbank: about 1,500 species in 30 zones, with rock and water gardens and an orchid house, more than a fifth of the country's flora. The Agricultural Museum, the first in Bangladesh, opened in 2007, and the Fish Museum is nearby.

It is green, quiet and full of students, a good place to walk along the river in the evening.

Getting there: 5 km south-east of the town centre; the Krishi Biswabidyalay railway station is at the campus.

Things to do

  • Visit the Agricultural Museum, the first in the country.
