About
The deputy commissioner started this museum in 1969 to keep what was left in the district's zamindar palaces. It began with 214 objects in three rooms of the garden house of the zamindar Madan Babu at 17 Amrita Babu Road; the Department of Archaeology took charge in 1989.
From Muktagachha came a stone flower vase, a compass, antique clocks, weaving machines, statues of Saraswati and Vishnu and the trophies of the maharajas' hunts: a tiger's head, two deer heads and a wild bull. Gauripur's palace sent elephant heads, a sofa set, Italian statues and a huge hunting shade; Atharobari gave a rhinoceros hide and a marble-topped table. There are coins, manuscripts and paintings of rural Bengal as well, a 1645 world map and Kedarnath Majumder's 1779 map of greater Mymensingh.
It is a small, old-fashioned museum and short of showcase space, so much of the collection is not on display, but nowhere else gathers the palaces' things in one place.
Getting there: 17 Amrita Babu Road, in the town centre.
