About

Most of the haor lies in Barlekha and Kulaura, the rest in Sylhet district. It is one of the largest freshwater wetlands in Asia: in the rains it becomes one sheet of water, and in winter it shrinks to a scatter of beels among grassland and swamp trees.

From November to February tens of thousands of ducks and waders arrive from the north. A boat on the beels at dawn is the way to see them.

Getting there: By road from Kulaura or Barlekha to the haor edge, then a local boat.

Things to do

  • Take a boat onto the beels at sunrise for the birds.

Good to know

  • Bring binoculars and keep boats at a distance from the flocks.
