About

The barrage diverts the Teesta into canals that water farmland across Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur and Dinajpur. Visitors come for the long line of gates, the river spreading wide on both sides, and sunsets over the sand.

In the dry season the river shrinks to channels between sandbanks; in the monsoon the gates are open and the water roars through. Boats can be hired on the upstream side.

Getting there: Bus to Hatibandha on the Burimari road, then an auto to Dalia.

Things to do

  • Stay for sunset over the river.
  • Take a short boat ride upstream.

Good to know

  • The barrage is a protected installation: follow the guards and do not photograph where told not to.
