About

Nobody knows exactly who dug it; local stories tie it to the ancient king Virat. It took the name Nilsagar after independence and has since been tidied into a park, with paths along the banks and a brick ghat that the Department of Archaeology lists as protected.

Come on a winter morning, when ducks cover the water and the mist lifts off it. Weekends and holidays are busy with picnic groups.

Getting there: Auto or easy-bike from Chowrangi mor in Nilphamari town, about 30 minutes.

Things to do

  • Walk the banks early to see the winter birds.

Good to know

  • Keep your distance from the birds; do not feed them.
