About

Matai Hakor, the "god's cave" of the Tripura people, is a crack through the hill with a stream running along its floor. You climb up through the Alutila tourist complex on the Chattogram road, go down a long stair into the ravine, and enter: it is pitch dark, cool, wet and narrow in places, and takes ten to fifteen minutes to walk through with a torch or a bamboo flambeau bought at the entrance. It comes out on the other side of the hill.

The complex on top has a viewpoint over the Chengi valley and the town, a cafe and a short walk; Richhang falls is a few kilometres on.

Getting there: CNG from Khagrachari town, 20 minutes on the Chattogram road; Richhang falls can be added for a little more.

Things to do

  • Walk the cave end to end, then the viewpoint on top.

Good to know

  • Shoes that can get wet; the floor is a stream and the rock is slippery.
  • Not for anyone uneasy in the dark or in tight spaces.
