About

The Gabkhan channel links the Sugandha at Jhalokati with the Sandhya in Pirojpur, cutting about 118 km off the Dhaka–Mongla and Chattogram–Mongla routes. It is sometimes called the Suez Canal of Bangladesh.

The bridge over it, opened in 2002 as the fifth Bangladesh–China Friendship Bridge, is built high so ships can pass beneath. Locals come up in the evening for the view and the breeze.

Getting there: On the Barishal–Khulna highway just outside Jhalokati town, by auto.

Things to do

  • Watch a cargo ship pass under at sunset.

Good to know

  • Mind the traffic; stay on the footway.
