A huge eighteenth-century tank at Madhabpasha, north of the city, dug by a raja of Chandradwip and named after his queen; a quiet walk round tree-lined banks with an island in the middle.

About

Raja Shiva Narayan of Chandradwip had the tank dug in 1780 and named it after his wife Durgamati. The water alone covers about 27 acres, and with its banks the site is over 45 acres.

Today it is a park: a path runs round the water under old trees, there is a small island in the centre, and in winter migratory ducks come in. Families visit on holidays; weekday mornings are quiet.

Getting there: About 12 km north of the city on the Swarupkathi road, by CNG or bus.

Things to do

  • Walk the full circuit of the bank.

Good to know

  • Winter mornings are best for the migratory birds.
