Known for

  1. 1

    Two hill forests.

In Chunarughat, on the low hills along the Tripura border, Satchari National Park is the easy one: marked trails, a canopy tower, western hoolock gibbons and langurs, and a Tripura village at its edge. Rema-Kalenga, a little south, is older, bigger and wilder, and is walked with a local guide.

  2. 2

    Tea, 1971 and the haor.

The Dhaka–Sylhet highway runs past Teliapara tea estate, where the sector commanders met in April 1971; a memorial stands there today. To the west the land drops into haor, where the Shankarpasha mosque of 1513, the Bithangal monastery and the Lakshmi Baor swamp forest wait.

GoodFairNov–Feb

November to February is dry and pleasant for the forest trails, and the best time to see birds. The haor sites (Bithangal, Lakshmi Baor) are reached by boat only when the water is high, from July to October; in the dry months the water drains away.
