About
Opened in 1966, the museum holds what the Lalmai–Mainamati excavations produced: the bronze and stone images from Shalban, Rupban and Kotila, the terracotta plaques that lined the shrines with their animals, dancers and warriors, gold and silver coins, inscribed copper plates that name the Deva and Chandra kings, oil lamps and tools. A relief model shows how the dozens of mounds sit on the ridge.
It is small and worth an hour; the labels are in both languages.
Getting there: Next to Shalban Vihara at Kotbari.
Things to do
- Find the terracotta plaques before you walk the vihara, so you know what the shrine looked like.
Good to know
- No photography inside some galleries; ask.
