About
Lalmai is the only high ground in the district: a ridge about 8 km long and up to 4.8 km wide, rising thirty-odd metres, formed in the same age as the Madhupur tract. Its red laterite soil gave it the name. Along its length lie more than fifty archaeological mounds, most unexcavated, and at the southern tip the hilltop temples of Chandi Mura, a Hindu pilgrimage site with a long stair.
The hills are a Sunday outing for the city: roads cross them, there are forest paths, pineapple gardens and a few picnic spots. Walk it in the cool months.
Getting there: CNG from Kotbari south along the ridge road, or from Lalmai bazar on the Dhaka highway.
Things to do
- Climb the Chandi Mura stair for the view over the plain.
Good to know
- Carry water; the ridge is dry and shadeless in places.
