About
Cox's Bazar is where Bangladesh goes to see the sea. The beach is sand the whole way, no mud, sloping gently into surf that is safe enough for wading when the flags are green and dangerous when they are red. The town's end is busy: beach chairs and umbrellas for hire, photographers, horses, jet skis, fried fish and coconut stalls, and the sunset crowd every evening.
Walk or ride south and the crowd thins within a few kilometres. The sand at Kolatoli gives way to the quieter stretch toward Himchari, and from there the marine drive runs beside the beach all the way to Teknaf. Lifeguards watch the main points; the rip currents are real, and every year people drown swimming out at the wrong tide.
Getting there: The beach is the town: every hotel on Kolatoli and Laboni roads is a few minutes' walk from the sand.
Things to do
- Watch the sunset from Laboni or Kolatoli point with a fried fish plate.
- Walk south at dawn when the beach is empty.
Good to know
- Swim only between the flags and never at dusk; the rip currents kill every year.
- Agree a price before a chair, a horse or a photograph.
