About

Parki is what Patenga is not: real sand, a long casuarina belt planted by the Forest Department, and room. It lies on the eastern, Anwara bank of the Karnaphuli where the river opens into the Bay, about 20 km from the city by road or a few minutes under the river since the Bangabandhu Tunnel opened in 2023. The beach runs 13 km south towards Banshkhali, and from it you watch the same ships and the same sunset as Patenga's crowds, from the other side.

A grounded cargo ship, the Crystal Gold, sat on the sand for years after a cyclone and became the beach's landmark. There are a few stalls, horse rides and a resort or two; most visitors come from the city for the evening and leave after dark.

Getting there: By car or CNG through the Bangabandhu Tunnel from Patenga, about 15 minutes; or by bus to Anwara and a CNG to the beach.

Things to do

  • Walk south along the casuarina belt away from the stalls.

Good to know

  • The current off the river mouth is dangerous; paddle, do not swim. Little lighting after dark.
