About

Patenga is not a beach for swimming or sand. It is where the river meets the sea, and the shore is a built embankment of concrete blocks and boulders with a promenade behind it, running south from the naval academy past the airport road. What people come for is the open horizon: lines of ships anchored off the port, fishing boats coming in, the Karnaphuli tunnel's mouth to the north, and the sun going down over the water with the city's noise far behind.

From late afternoon the promenade fills with families, students and couples. Stalls fry loitta and shrimp, sell coconut, pithas and tea; there are ferris wheels and horses for children, and benches to sit until dark. The naval academy and the airport are next door, which is why photography of the installations is not allowed, and why the beach has been tidied up over the years.

It is the easiest outing in the district and the one every visitor does.

Getting there: CNG, bus or ride-hailing from the city along the Airport Road, 30–45 minutes; the beach is just past the airport turn.

Things to do

  • Walk the promenade and watch the ships at anchor as the sun goes down.
  • Eat fried loitta and shrimp from the stalls.

Good to know

  • Do not swim: the current at the river mouth is strong and the boulders are slippery.
  • No photographs of the naval academy or airport; weekends and holidays are very crowded.
