About
Built between 1892 and 1898 to house the district court, the building crowns Parir Pahar in the middle of the old city, a long red block in the Indo-Saracenic style the British favoured for public buildings: Mughal domes and chhatris, pointed arches, deep verandahs and a clock. It is still a working court, with the deputy commissioner's offices beside it, so the hill is busy with lawyers, clerks and litigants on weekdays.
Visitors come for the façade and for the hill. From the terrace and the road that circles it you look down over Anderkilla, the Karnaphuli and the cranes of the port, the best free view in the city. The Anderkilla mosque is a short walk downhill.
Getting there: Anderkilla or Laldighi by CNG, then the road up Parir Pahar; 10 minutes from the station.
Things to do
- Walk round the hill for the view over the river and port.
Good to know
- It is a courthouse: no photography inside, and Fridays are the quiet day to see the outside.
