About

Nafa is the Marma name of a fish that leaps the fall; khum is a pool. From Thanchi bazar, where every visitor registers with the army and takes a guide, boats go up the Sangu through the Tindu rapids and the Raja Pathar stones to Remakri (three to four hours), a Marma village with simple lodgings. From Remakri it is a two-to-three-hour walk along and across the stream to the fall, which pours over a rock lip in a broad sheet, best from August to November. Amiakhum and the Nakshiyang gorge are a further day beyond. Thanchi closes to visitors at times; check in Bandarban first.

Getting there: Bandarban → Thanchi by jeep or bus (3 h) → register, guide → boat to Remakri (3–4 h) → on foot (2–3 h).

Things to do

  • Sleep at Remakri, walk to the fall at first light, bathe in the pool below.

Good to know

  • The stream crossings are waist-deep after rain; a life jacket on the Sangu boat is not optional. ID copies for Thanchi and Remakri checkposts.

A set of natural caves in a hill above the Matamuhuri river at Alikadam, reached by a stream walk and bamboo ladders: narrow dark passages through the rock, a local legend of a saint named Ali, and the southern district's one well-known sight.

The 986-metre peak above Boga Lake, for decades called the highest in the country and still the classic trek: a day's climb through Bawm villages to a summit shelter with the Myanmar hills on the horizon.
