About

From Nafakhum the trail continues up to Thuisa para, a Marma village where trekkers sleep, then over a ridge and down a near-vertical descent (the "devil's stair") to the Sangu at Amiakhum. The river falls through a narrow rock gorge in a wall of foam; a bamboo raft takes you through the Satbhaikhum pools below it, between cliffs. Velakhum is a little further. It is two or three days from Thanchi with a guide, registration at every village, and the understanding that the route closes whenever the army says so.

Getting there: On foot from Nafakhum via Thuisa para, about 5–6 hours; everything from Thanchi with a registered guide.

Things to do

  • Raft through Satbhaikhum at midday when the sun reaches the gorge floor.

Good to know

  • Only for the fit and with an experienced guide; the descent and the stream crossings have killed people.

Nafakhum

Jadipai Waterfall

One of the widest falls in the country, below Jadipai para on the far side of Keokradong: a steep two-hour descent from the peak to a broad white curtain over rock, roaring in the rains, with a rainbow in the spray on sunny mornings.

Boga Lake

24 km, Bandarban

A deep blue lake in a crater at about 1,250 feet in Ruma, held sacred by the Bawm village on its shore, the base camp for Keokradong: cottages by the water, a cold swim and a night under the stars after the jeep ride up from Ruma bazar.

The army-run hilltop resort at about 2,200 feet, 47 km from town on the Thanchi road: cloud below the cottages in the cold months and the ranges of the Hill Tracts in every direction; the most visited viewpoint in the district.
