About
The Dawki river comes out of India here and becomes the Piyain, running clear over beds of stones beneath the Khasi and Jaintia hills; the suspension bridge at Dawki hangs in view on the Indian side. Stone collecting from the river has long been the local living, and you will see boats and workers at it.
Boats cross to the far bank and to the Khasi village of Sangrampunji, where a waterfall drops off the hills in the rains. Bathing in the river is popular but the current is strong after rain.
Getting there: About 1.5–2 hours by bus, CNG or car on the Tamabil road.
Things to do
- Take a boat to Sangrampunji and its waterfall.
Good to know
- Do not cross the border markers; BGB watches the bank.
- Wear sandals with grip: the stones are slippery.
