About
In the zamindari era, taxes and rent for this part of Shalikha were collected at the Chhandra zamindar house, and the area was governed from it. The district dates the house to the first half of the Mughal period. Local people say its ruins are the last of their kind in the area, still standing as witnesses of that time.
No names or dates for the family are on record, and nothing here is restored, so this is a trip for those who like quiet ruins in farm country. The ride itself is part of it: a bus to Simakhali bazar on the Jashore road, then a van between the fields to Chhandra village.
Getting there: From Arpara in Shalikha take a bus to Simakhali bazar, then a van to Chhandra.
Things to do
- Ride a van through the fields to the ruins.
- Ask villagers what they remember of the zamindars.
Good to know
- Ruined walls can fall: keep clear of crumbling parts.
- Carry water; there is little at the site.
