About
Cut off from the rest of the district by the river, Rowmari keeps a slow rural life. The crossing from Chilmari is itself the trip, past chars and fishing boats; on the far side, villages, markets and fields run up to the border with the Meghalaya hills beyond.
It was held as free territory through the 1971 war. Plan a full day, or stay a night in the upazila town.
Getting there: Bus or CNG from Kurigram to Chilmari, then a boat across the Brahmaputra.
Things to do
- Cross from Chilmari in the morning and come back before dark.
Good to know
- Carry ID near the border and keep away from the zero line.
