About
Madhusudan was born here in 1824 into the Dutt family of landowners. He left for Calcutta as a boy, became a Christian and wrote in English before turning to Bangla, where his blank verse changed the language's poetry. The Kapotaksha, the river of his childhood, appears in one of his best-known sonnets.
The house, the pond with its old ghat, and the grounds are looked after by the archaeology department, with a few objects from the family on show. A school founded in 1944 stands on the open land in front.
Every January the Madhu Mela, a week-long fair with music and poetry, fills the village around the poet's birthday.
Getting there: Bus from Jashore to Keshabpur, then a CNG or easy-bike to Sagardari.
Things to do
- Walk down to the Kapotaksha bank after the house.
Good to know
- Combine with Mirzanagar's bath house on the same Keshabpur trip.
