About

Durmut is a union of Melandaha, west of Jamalpur town on the way to the Jamuna chars, and its mazar of Hazrat Shah Kamal, Durmut Kamal Shah to the villages around, is the kind of country shrine that comes alive once a year. Through the month of Baishakh, from mid-April, the urs is held and a fair spreads over the fields around it: stalls of sweets, bangles, pottery and household things, rides for children, singers at night, and buses of people from across Jamalpur and Sherpur. The district administration plans its policing weeks ahead, which tells you the size of it.

For the rest of the year it is a quiet dargah with a mosque and the graves, kept by the khadims, where people come on Thursdays and for vows.

Getting there: Train or bus to Melandaha, then a CNG to Durmut Bazar; the mazar is beside it.

Things to do

  • Come in Baishakh for the fair and the night singing.

Good to know

  • The fair is crowded and the lanes jam; come by CNG rather than car, and keep valuables close.
