About
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born in Tungipara and was buried here after his assassination in 1975. For years access to the grave was restricted; after 1996 the Department of Archaeology began building a complex around it, which opened to the public in 2001.
The complex was designed by the architects Ehsan Khan, Ishtiaque Zahir and Iqbal Habib. Beside the tomb, which also holds his parents' graves, the grounds have his family home, a library and a museum. It is a place of national remembrance, so it gets crowded on anniversaries.
Getting there: Bus or CNG from Gopalganj town to Tungipara, under an hour.
Things to do
- Walk through the grounds to the old family home.
Good to know
- Dress modestly and keep quiet near the tomb.
