About

Designed by the architect Syed Mainul Hossain and completed in 1982, the memorial is made of seven triangular planes rising to a point, each read as a stage of the struggle for independence. A long path leads to it over lawns and water.

On Independence Day (26 March) and Victory Day (16 December) the nation's leaders lay wreaths at dawn and crowds follow. On other days it is calm and spacious, a contrast to the city.

Getting there: Bus or car from Gabtoli along the Dhaka–Aricha highway to Savar, about an hour.

Things to do

  • Walk the long approach and visit the mass graves beside it.

Good to know

  • Go early to beat the traffic on the Dhaka–Aricha road.
