- Meaning
- Cool building (Persian)
About
Shah Shuja, son of Shah Jahan, governed Bengal in the mid 17th century. Tahkhana is Persian for a cool building: the brick palace steps down to the tank, so its lower rooms stay cool in summer, and the water kept it so. It has several storeys of rooms and corridors, partly below ground.
The complex is a pleasant place to wander, with the mosque and the mazar of Shah Niamatullah a few steps away under old trees. It pairs naturally with Choto Sona Mosque, about half a kilometre off.
Getting there: At Sonamasjid, about half a kilometre north-west of Choto Sona Mosque.
Things to do
- See the palace from across the tank, then the mosque and the mazar.
Good to know
- Walk here from Choto Sona Mosque.
