One of the country's busiest land ports, on the border with Malda at Shibganj, a short way from the Gaur monuments: a look at the frontier as you finish the old capital.

Mahdipur, Malda

About

Trucks queue here with stone, coal, fruit, spices and farm goods from India, and a busy bazaar has grown around the port. Travellers with a visa cross on foot to Mahdipur and on to Malda and the Indian half of Gaur.

There is nothing formal to visit, but the queues, the money changers and the border gates show how trade still moves along this old route.

Getting there: At the end of the highway past Choto Sona Mosque, about 3 km.

Things to do

  • Walk the bazaar near the port gate.

Good to know

  • Do not photograph the border posts or officials.
