The walled citadel of ancient Pundranagara on the Karatoya, the oldest city site found in Bangladesh, lived in from at least the third century BC to the medieval period.
At a glance
- Ancient name
- Pundranagara
- From Bogura town
- About 13 km north
About
Pundranagara was a provincial capital under a long line of rulers, Maurya, Gupta, Pala and Sena among them, and the ruins show layers from all of them. What you see today is a raised rectangle of brick ramparts, a little over a kilometre on its long side, with excavated gates, wall sections, wells and temple bases inside.
Walk the top of the walls for the view over the Karatoya and the fields, then down to the exposed brickwork. The mounds outside the citadel, the museum and Govinda Bhita are all within a short walk or rickshaw ride.
Getting there: Bus or CNG from Bogura town on the Rangpur road, about 30 minutes.
Things to do
- Walk the rampart and see the Jiyat Kund well.
Good to know
- Go early in the day; there is little shade on the walls.
