About
Madhutila is the quieter of Sherpur's two hill parks. The Forest Department declared this stretch of the Madhutila range an eco-park in 1999, and it keeps the feel of a managed forest: sal and gajari on the slopes, a twenty-acre plantation of medicinal trees, rose and seasonal flower beds near the entrance, and paths that climb through the trees to the top of the ridge.
The watchtower stands on the highest point. A long flight of steps leads up to it, and from the top the forest rolls away to the hills of Meghalaya on one side and the paddy of Nalitabari on the other; it is the best wide view in the district. Below, a lake fills the hollow between the slopes, with a few country boats and pedal boats to hire and a bridge the park calls the Star Bridge across one end. There are animal sculptures along the paths, a small zoo, a children's corner, a canteen and the Mahua rest house, which is for daytime use with permission from the deputy commissioner's office; nobody stays the night.
It is a day trip from Dhaka for many, but it pairs naturally with Gajni, about an hour away along the border road, and with Panihata and Baromari further east.
Getting there: From Sherpur town, a local bus or CNG from Shapla Chattar to Nanni Bazar in Nalitabari, then an auto or motorcycle to the gate; or the Mohakhali gate-lock bus to Nalitabari and an auto from there, 20–25 minutes.
Things to do
- Climb the steps to the watchtower for the view over the forest to Meghalaya.
- Take a country boat across the lake.
- Walk the forest paths and the medicinal plantation.
Good to know
- Bring water and snacks; the canteen is small and there is no restaurant.
- The rest house is day-use only and needs permission in advance from the DC office in Sherpur.
