About
The Haturia zamindar house stands in Char Bhuyai village, Nalmuri union, in Gosairhat. Its zamindar, Golam Ali Chowdhury, was famous for his power and his tastes: he had ice brought specially from Darjeeling, and his clothes washed at a well-known laundry in Kolkata. His grandeur turns up as an example in the poem Kheya Ghater Majhi.
The house is built of brick and surki, the old brick-dust mortar, with flat iron bars under the roof and very thick brick pillars, which is why it still stands firm. Years of neglect have worn it down, but it remains a fine example of how Bengal's zamindars built and lived.
Getting there: By bus from Shariatpur to Gosairhat, then a local ride to Char Bhuyai in Nalmuri union.
Things to do
- Look at the thick brick pillars and the iron-barred roof.
Good to know
- The house is neglected: keep out of damaged rooms.
