About
Latkan grows on the trunk itself rather than at the branch tips, so a laden tree looks hung with yellow beads from the ground up. The red, well-drained soil of Belabo and Shibpur suits it, and over recent decades whole villages have turned to it.
The gardens are private farms, but growers are used to visitors in season and many sell straight from the tree. The village bazaars fill with baskets of fruit in the mornings.
Getting there: From Narsingdi, a CNG to Shibpur or Belabo, then ask locally for the gardens.
Things to do
- Buy latkan straight from a grower and see the laden trunks.
Good to know
- Ask before entering a garden; these are private farms.
