About
Alexander is Ramgati's town, named by the British, and its reason to exist is the river. The embankment built to hold the Meghna back has been paved and lit, with benches and tea stalls, and in the dry months a strip of sand and mud below it that people call the beach. Fishing boats come in with hilsa, boatmen take visitors out on the water, and in the evening the whole town walks here. Erosion has taken whole villages from this shore within living memory; the concrete blocks along the bank are the defence.
Getting there: Bus or CNG from Lakshmipur to Alexander, about 1.5 hours.
Things to do
- Fried hilsa from a stall as the sun goes down.
Good to know
- The current is strong; boats only with a life jacket, and no swimming.
