About

Named after the viceroy Lord Hardinge, the bridge was built between 1909 and 1915; for a century it was the longest railway bridge in the country, and its fifteen steel spans still carrying trains across the Padma. Some spans were hit in 1971 and later repaired.

The Lalon Shah road bridge, opened in 2004, stands just beside it and links Kushtia with Pabna. The river banks on the Bheramara side are a popular evening spot, best when the water is low in winter.

Getting there: Bus or CNG from Kushtia to Bheramara, about an hour, then a short ride to the river.

Things to do

  • Watch a train cross from the river bank at sunset.

Good to know

  • Do not walk on the rail bridge; view it from the bank.
