Known for

  1. 1

    The Jamuna's edge.

Gaibandha's east is river and char: from Balasi ghat in Phulchhari, boats cross the wide Jamuna to the sandbank villages and on to Bahadurabad, the best way to see how people live with the river.

  2. 2

    Old Gobindaganj.

In the south, Gobindaganj keeps the oldest past: the mound tied by legend to King Virata of the Mahabharata, the ruins of Bardhan Kuthi, and old mosques and zamindar houses scattered across the district.

November to February: the Jamuna is calm, the chars are dry enough to walk, and the days are cool. In the monsoon, June to September, the river floods widely and boat trips are rough.
