About
Dosh Gombuj is a reminder that Khalifatabad is mostly still underground. In the village of Ranvijoypur, people preparing the ground for a new mosque hit old brick, and the Department of Archaeology's dig uncovered the base of a long hall, about 15 metres by 5.5, with the stumps of four pillars: a mosque of two rows of five domes, planned, the archaeologists think, after the Sixty Dome Mosque nearby. It seems to have fallen in a storm or flood, after which a modest mosque was built on top of it, and that is roughly what you see: low old walls around and under a plain modern prayer house.
It will not take long, and it is not beautiful, but for anyone interested in how the city was found it is the most honest site in Bagerhat: a sultanate mosque with a village one standing on its shoulders.
Getting there: In Ranvijoypur village, east of the Ronvijoypur Mosque toward the town; ask for Dosh Gombuj.
Things to do
- Walk round the outside and pick out the old brick courses under the new walls.
Good to know
- Only for the curious; skip it on a short visit.
