A great tank at Patnitala with a carved, eight-sided granite pillar about 31 feet tall rising from the middle of the water, linked by tradition with the Kaivarta rebel king Divya.
At a glance
- Height
- About 31 ft 8 in, part under water
- Material
- Granite, eight-sided
About
The pillar is a single octagonal shaft of granite, carved with bands at the top, about a fifth of it under water. It carries no inscription, so why it stands here is argued: most accounts call it Divya's victory column after the Kaivarta revolt against the Palas in the 11th century, others a memorial raised by his successors.
Whatever its story, a stone column standing alone in a still tank, ringed by trees and rice fields, is one of the most striking sights in northern Bangladesh. Come in winter when the water is calm and the light is soft.
Getting there: From Naogaon town to Patnitala by bus, then a CNG to the tank.
Things to do
- Walk the banks to see the pillar from every side.
Good to know
- Roads to the tank are rural; go with a local driver.
