About
A retired naval officer, Syed Amanul Huda, began building this in 2001 on the Khulna–Mongla road and named its centrepiece after his wife, Chandra. It opened in 2009 and has become the district's picnic ground. The main building is a white domed palace standing in a lake, entered through a glass-walled tunnel under the water where fish swim past at eye level; inside is his collection of old things, coins, stamps, swords, chandeliers and household goods from the last two centuries, crowded into every room. Around it are flower gardens, several ponds, a bamboo bridge painted with folk patterns, a floating stage shaped like a country boat, a Liberation War memorial, a model of the vanished Rupsha–Bagerhat railway, and statues of figures from Surya Sen to Mother Teresa. A small zoo keeps deer, crocodiles, monkeys and birds.
It is not a heritage site and makes no claim to be one; it is a family afternoon, loud on holidays and pleasant on a weekday morning, and a useful break between the Kodla Math and Mongla. Children like it a great deal.
Getting there: At Ranjitpur on the Khulna–Mongla highway, about 15 km from Bagerhat town; any Mongla- or Khulna-bound bus stops at the gate.
