Known for

  1. 1

The western gate of the Sundarbans.

From Munshiganj and Nildumur in Shyamnagar, boats cross into the forest: Kalagachhia's trail for a day, or longer trips as far as the empty beach at Mandarbaria.

  2. 2

    Temples and Pratapaditya's land.

Shyamnagar was the seat of Raja Pratapaditya of Jessore; the Jeshoreshwari temple at Ishwaripur, one of the Shakti Peethas, stands among the remains of that time.

November to February: dry roads and calm rivers for the Sundarbans. The monsoon makes the rivers rough and boat trips uncertain; cyclones strike the coast in May and in October–November.
