About
Carew & Co began with a sugar factory, a distillery and a pharmaceutical unit, and it still crushes cane from the surrounding fields each winter. The compound keeps its old bungalows, tree-lined roads and, oddly, the graves of two pet dogs of the British managers, Simba and Biddy.
Darshana itself is a small border town with a land port and the rail crossing to Gede in India. Visiting the factory floor needs permission; the compound and the town can be seen freely.
Getting there: Bus, CNG or train from Chuadanga to Darshana, about 30 minutes.
Things to do
- Find the graves of Simba and Biddy in the compound.
Good to know
- Go in the crushing season, roughly December to March, to see it working.
